As a transdisciplinary hands-on learning space at UCLA, the jane b semel Healthy Campus Initiative Community Garden builds community, and promotes personal and planetary health with a goal of supporting equity and food justice.

Atop UCLA’s iconic Sunset Canyon Amphitheater rests the jane b semel (jbs) Healthy Campus Initiative Community Garden, a dynamic learning space comprised of thirty-one raised beds flanked by an assortment of over fifty evergreen and deciduous fruit trees. Our garden is committed to biodynamic gardening with all of our raised beds filled with the richest and most nutritious soil from One Gun Ranch in Malibu.

The garden and the teaching kitchen promote physical, emotional and social well-being through an integrative approach from the preparation of food in the kitchen or virtually to the planting and cultivation in the garden, to the conversations and fragrances, one experiences while in the garden or the kitchen. The garden addresses the basic needs of UCLA students by providing produce to the food closet, the teaching kitchen and graduate family housing and the teaching kitchen teaches the students about healthy cooking on a budget; the garden and the kitchen also support the emotional and social wellbeing of students.
